Pune Metro Line 2: Vanaz Metro Station and Beyond

Traffic congestion is a major challenge for Pune city. With the city growing and newer pockets opening up for commercial and residential developments, one of the biggest challenges is sustainable public transport. The Pune Metro has been designed to combat traffic, provide convenience, and ease commuting. The Pune Metro is being managed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Pune Metro Network Overview

Pune Metro Line 2 (Aqua Line): Recent Developments

Modi Inaugurates Extension on March 6

Taking it further, PM Modi on March 6, inaugurated the 5.5 km extension of the Aqua Line from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi through video conferencing. The four stations in this route will include Bund Garden, Yerawada, Kalyani Nagar, and Ramwadi. Once operational, the entire stretch of the Aqua Line will span over 15.7 km from Vanaz to Ramwadi.

This is Pune’s second mass transit system. Partial operations of the Aqua Line from Vanaz to Garware College started on March 6, 2022. This stretch was extended till Ruby Hall Clinic and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 1, 2023.

The Pune Metro Aqua Line is a well-planned elevated route. Spread over 15 km, the Pune Metro Aqua Line has 20 stations. It stretches from Vanaz on the west-end corridor to Ramwadi. These are the two terminal stations on the Pune Metro Aqua Line. The Aqua Line has an interchange station at Civil Court for people to board the Pune Metro Purple Line.

Pune Metro Line 2 to Extend: Vanaz - Chandni Chowk, Ramwadi - Wagholi

The Maharashtra government on March 11 approved an extension on both sides of Pune Metro Aqua Line. Note that this line started complete operations on March 6, 2024, when it was virtually flagged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Pune Metro Phase-2 extension on both sides will cover a total of 12.75 km. There will be 13 new stations as part of this extension. The project cost is estimated at Rs 3756.58 crore.

Pune Metro Phase-2: Vanaz to Chandni Chowk Extension

The Vanaz to Chandni Chowk stretch spanning 1.12 km will have 2 elevated stations:

Pune Metro Aqua Line: Fare

The Pune Metro Aqua Line fare is based on the travel length. The fare ranges between Rs 10-35. One can book single or return tickets from the counter. Day and monthly passes are also available. Metro tickets can be bought through Metro Smart Cards that can be recharged at any Pune Metro station.

Note that Pune Metro offers a concession of 30% on the metro tickets to everyone on Saturday and Sunday.

Pune Metro Aqua Line: Increase in Frequency

Starting January 1, 2024, the frequency of the Pune Metro Aqua Line will be improved with additional trips added to the Pune Metro Line 2. There will be an additional 31 trips that will be handled by Pune Metro Line 2. Presently, the line has 80 trips in a day and with this added frequency, the number will reach 111 trips in a day.

The Pune Metro Line 2 will see a metro every 7.5 minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes during non-peak hours.
