The Hyderabad Metro, approved by the Union Urban Development Ministry in 2003, has come a long way since its inception. With the help of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in the initial planning stages, the metro now serves nearly 3 lakh passengers daily. Telangana Govt Allocates Rs 500 Cr for Hyderabad Old City Metro Project

On July 25, 2024, the Telangana government announced a significant allocation of Rs 500 crore for the Hyderabad Old City metro project in the State Budget. Additionally, Rs 100 crore has been allocated for the metro extension to the Airport. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone for the Old City metro rail project on March 8, 2024. This elevated metro line is part of the 70-km Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 project and will include four stations: Salarjung Museum, Charminar, Shalibanda, and Falaknuma.

Hyderabad Airport Metro Line to be Extended Up to Mindspace Junction

The Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited plans to extend the current Blue Line from Nagole to Mindspace Junction, a proposed multi-level station about 800 meters from the Raidurg Terminal Station. According to Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited MD NVS Reddy, the new multi-level station will feature a common concourse with both non-ticketing and ticketing areas, followed by the Airport Metro station, and the extended Blue Line Raidurg terminal station on the topmost tier. The Airport corridor project is expected to be completed in three years, with ongoing work to finish Phase-1 pending tasks. There are also plans to expand metro services to Ramoji Rao Film City and other city areas.

Major Boost for Hyderabad Metro; State Budget Allocates Rs 2,500 Crore

The Telangana State Budget has allocated a total of Rs 2,500 crore to enhance the metro network in Hyderabad. This includes Rs 500 crore for the Hyderabad Airport connectivity project, Rs 500 crore for metro rail connectivity, and Rs 1,500 crore for loan payments. The Rs 500 crore allocated to HMRL will fund the 5.5-km MGBS-Falaknuma Metro Rail line. Presenting the State Budget, Finance Minister T Harish Rao highlighted the sharp rise in travelers using the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). The metro rail connectivity to the airport, costing Rs 6,250 crore, is expected to be completed in three years with state funds. Recently, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao laid the foundation for the Hyderabad metro airport, which will operate from Raidurg to Shamshabad airport, covering a distance of 31 km.
